THE CoNoAwards

A quarterly celebration of the photographers who understand that boudoir is not just what you capture — it's what you create in the space between subject and lens.

The Standard of Black Boudoir Photography

Sensuality is not a pose.
It is presence. Intention. The courage to be fully seen.

THE CoNo Awards is a space for Black boudoir photographers who approach their work as art — who understand that technical mastery and emotional depth are not separate things. This competition honors the images that stay with you long after you stop looking at them.

THE CoNo Awards — Black Boudoir Photography

For photographers who
shoot with intention.

THE CoNo Awards is Coterie Noir's Summer 2026 quarterly photographic competition — built specifically by and for Black boudoir photographers. Every submission is evaluated through a multi-point judging rubric that prioritizes emotional truth alongside technical craft.

We are looking for the work that demonstrates mastery — not just of light and lens, but of connection. Of trust. Of the quiet, powerful collaboration between photographer and subject that produces something neither of them could have created alone.

Your images speak. This is where they belong.

What We're Looking For

01

Lighting

Intentional, technically sound, and emotionally resonant use of light. Does the lighting serve the subject — and the story?

02

Technical Quality

Focus, exposure, dynamic range, and image resolution. Technical execution at the level of a working professional.

03

Composition

Deliberate use of frame, negative space, leading lines, and visual hierarchy. A composition that holds the eye and guides it with purpose.

04

Posing & Direction

Subject direction that communicates ease, confidence, and authenticity. Poses that feel lived-in, not constructed.

05

Story & Emotion

The narrative the image carries. The feeling it produces in the viewer — and whether that feeling was the photographer's intention.

06

Impact

The image's staying power. What lingers after you close the tab? Judges evaluate residual emotional effect.

07

Creativity & Style

A recognizable artistic perspective. Work that couldn't have been made by anyone else — and that extends the vocabulary of Black boudoir photography.

08

Skin & Retouching

Editing that honors and celebrates darker skin tones. Retouching that enhances without erasing — that preserves texture, undertone, and identity.

"Not just how it looks.
How it feels."

What Makes a
Strong Submission

This is not a checklist. It's a way of thinking about your work before you submit it. The strongest entries reflect a photographer who knows exactly what they were doing — and why.

Emotional Connection

The viewer should feel something within the first three seconds of looking. Not manufactured warmth — genuine resonance. The kind that comes from a photographer who earned the trust of their subject before they ever picked up a camera.

Intentional Posing

Every angle, every line of the body, every placement of a hand — chosen. Subjects should appear at ease in their own skin, not performing ease. There is a difference, and judges can see it.

Authentic Storytelling

The image should communicate something specific about this woman, in this moment. Generic beauty is not storytelling. We want the particular — the detail that makes this image irreplaceable.

Cohesive Styling

Set, wardrobe, hair, and makeup should work in the same direction. Cohesion signals intentionality. Strong submissions feel curated — every element earning its place in the frame.

Editing of Darker Skin Tones

This is non-negotiable. Proper exposure during capture and editing that preserves the full richness of darker complexions — warm undertones, texture, depth. Skin should glow, not flatten. Judges evaluate whether the editing celebrates or erases.

Artistic Point of View

The work should feel authored. Not replicated, not trend-chasing — built from a clear creative perspective that is identifiably yours. The photographers who consistently win competitions are the ones who stopped trying to shoot like anyone else.

"Desire is presence."

A note on workshop images

Images captured during boudoir workshops — including live shoots, model calls, and instructional sessions — are not eligible for submission. THE CoNo Awards is built to celebrate the relationship between a photographer and her own client, in her own creative space. Workshop images, however beautiful, do not represent that standard. We reserve this competition for the work that is fully and authentically yours.
